This method is based on the suction of the soil-air from the unsaturated zone and its surface treatment using sorbent filters (eg., activated carbon or biofilters). This technology is aimed mainly at the volatile organic compounds (VOCs such as BTEX) and it is commonly combined with air sparging or in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using fenton's reagent.

When deployed in order to produce biostimulating aerobic conditions in the vadose zone (for enhanced attenuation purposes), this method is called the BIOVENTING (with the use of lower venting system power).
