This method uses the application of substances supporting the attenuation processes - especially contaminant biodegradation - into the subsurface (i.e., support of the autochthonuous microorganisms). Using nutrient solutions, the environment is supplied mainly with the nitrogen and phosphorus, utilizable by the microorganisms mainly for cell construction.

In case there is a lack of electron acceptors in the environment, the nutrient solutions are amended also with these substances (oxygen, nitrates, sulfates, or ferrous and manganese ions).
